alix perez and spectrasoul have earned their stripes as pioneers of the deeper and more melodic side of the genre. these gentlemen are known for their versatility, and their progressive attitudes toward music. both acts came up through shogun, and their first collaboration forsaken quickly became a benchmark for quality in drum and bass. the synergy ep is 4 tracks of concise, stripped back, mature and soulful music that bumps. perez and spectrasoul have recently formed their own imprints, and as a celebration of this, the synergy ep is a joint release between the artists labels - ish chat music (spectrasoul), and 1985 music (alix perez). the ep has seen repeated support from dbridge, skeptical, lsb, lenzman, marky, ivy lab and others.

planet rhythm usual yan cook teams up with fellow ukranian artist mays for a tough collaboration record named “old friend ep”. on the opening-track “fixed” the tone is being set for this being an utter dancefloor effort with the extended use of fx and modulation. “old friend” resumes in this fashion bringing a glitchy atmosphere of some kind together with matches chords and outlandish drum work. the b-side opens up with the futuristic tones of “coder” which is based around tough synth arpeggiators and ferocious kick drums. “tesla” continues down the road of futuristic techno with it’s strong and extended fx works and intrusive synthesizer sounds.

various is a good word to describe this escales vol.2 from croisière musique crew, the second various e.p. from the label, which seems so diverse that it almost could seem inconsistent to someone not familiar with the label. at the same time this e.p. summarizes perfectly a collection of different styles and aspects of croisière musique, from some heavy dancefloor-friendly house and techno to more abstract acid grooves, going through breaky minimalism. a1 – the e.p. starts with battle of wits from sebastian eduardo which is a direct uncompromising floor-oriented piece of house, setting a filtered atmosphere, bouncy bassline and a filtered synth which reminds us of a dubby atmosphere. a thick and compact atmospheric part progressively takes on the middle of the track and suddenly fades to let the main dancing pattern return. a2 – lowlifequalitys is a spatious acid piece which contains elements that are close to the aesthetic of video games. all synths coming together give a sense of confusion yet ordered by the repetitiveness of the loop. the sensation of something nerd and muddle rise from this experience, a expression of weirdness by the member of les points.b1 – programming behavior sets a step back in the ep, evolving around an hypnothic vocal piece which is extracted from an old interview of george clinton, heavily chopped and processed. on top of the simple breaky drum pattern which recenters the experience, gets added an arpeggio and a modular synth sounding sequence which progressively dramatizes the track. rx delivers here a mysterious piece of minimalism, bitter yet swingy. b2 – the e.p. ends with catan, the first appearance from françois, who co-founded croisière musique with rx. starting with an ambiant and breaky atmosphere, catan quickly evolves to a drivy four step techno piece. on top of the leading synth comes different glitchy elements, aerial pads and a disturbing shamanistic glitch in the middle of the track that announces a break which confuses the listener. the track follows-up on this contradiction between the hypnotic grooves and the solid drivy techno.

persistence is back with the third release, a new split ep with manuel di martino and the italian duo asylum with remixes by johannes volk and jeff rushin. the a side contains the original track of manuel di martino called necessary phase, engaging groove and hypnotic synth are the right adjectives to describe this track. volk,s remix is inspired to the new york techno scene with stomp drum, raw groove and marked synth. side b open with substance by asylum, this track contains dark and closed sounds, a real trip into shadows. jeff rushin revisits this creating a very functional tool, and especially the right mix of dark and dancefloor s sounds.

following a joint live performance in 2016, butter sessions present the latest collaborative effort from albrecht la brooy (analogue attic) & sleep d (butter sessions). this ep sees al & sd blend their respective styles in a stimulating way. from 50 begins the ep with steady 909 grooves and a subtle oscillating acid bass that builds into another dimension. hotham breaks the pace with atmospheric space leads looking down on a mountain of kick drums. banksia is the most psychedelic of the four, planting seeds of heavily resonating synths atop of floating drum rhythms and warm melodies. lastly, sleeping patterns takes it down a few notches into a daydream of flute-like synths and distant nostalgic vocals.

little mary strays from the pack, floating from one rock to another, in the midst of the narrow cascading river stream. feeling the respirating leaves ebb and flow, she caught a glimpse of a pagan rain dance, a drum circle within a pocket of sunshine – where all mantras come to life. this captivating split ep (titled ‘acosta’), sees kilchhofer’s second 12”, after his ‘dersu’ ep on ‘marionette’. the flip side features hainbach who gets his work pressed on vinyl for the very first time – after a few tape releases, his latest being on ted butler & cortini’s ‘limited interest’ label. this is truly something wonderful from two very gifted and unique artists.

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

to celebrate 14 years of the intrigue club night, ben soundscape s intrigue music label are putting out a brand new album called ‘intrigue 14’. the album is a truly versatile selection covering a wide spectrum of deep drum & bass. it contains 14 exclusive tracks and remixes from the likes of calibre, break, randall, random movement, ill truth, ben soundscape, roygreen & protone, joakuim, raw q and more. it follows on from the previous three in the series, which began at the start of 2014. it has received huge support from across the scene including plays by friction on bbc radio 1, calibre, fabio, dj marky, ltj bukem and more. the album is released april 14th on limited 4-track vinyl ep

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production. using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music. the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, pt.3 is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.

jvxta steps up to the plate fresh from his outing with bokhari’s swamp tape series to open the record with dream, an atmospheric and jazzy number, utilising a soulful vocal to construct a cut that is suggestive of a modern day nu groove release. a2 takes it to lusher territory with lucia with swinging hats floating atop cascading rhodes and synth trills, while the flip side delivers a more ominous affair. dark chords ride along the classic, murky garage of midnight, finally leading to the driving drum workouts of zapata’s legitimate - perfect peaktime material.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!

rising amsterdam-based star esther duijn leads the charge with a hypnotic, understated slice of dub techno that grooves in all the right places. label boss brothers vibe then steps up with a sharp-edged, percussion led workout that blooms into a fulsome, acidic jam laced with techno futurism and pure machine soul. german production duo youandme are regular collaborators with brothers vibe, and here they join forces for the tough, drum-pounding playing with toys. rodriguez also takes the opportunity to unveil the silent rodgerz alias, championing the toad red vision with a daring, experimental trip through abstractmodular-synthesizer processes that build towards a jacking rhythmic throw-down.

language is a tricky thing. it’s possible to convey the most beautiful and heartfelt experiences with just a few words but meanings can be lost in translation. language itself being just a symbol pointing to the actual thing, like fingers pointing to the moon it’s key not to mistake the finger for the actual moon. if you do you might miss all the heavenly glory the finger is pointing to. the map is not the territory. kiani & his legion is back on sohaso with the next chapter in his sonic explorations. a mini-album that’s more than the sum of it parts, drawing you in with a story worth to be told. using a language that doesn’t need to be explained trough words, the symbols merge with their meaning trough sound. the story commences with a female voice whispering gently to you to ‘close your eyes and fly’ and while making your journey don’t forget to ‘breath’. you get introduced to the sturdy drum patterns and eerie string pads that have become main ingredients for kiani’s soundworld. eindeloos takes an irresistible groove and badass walking bass winding up between endless flanging spirals. oval flight starts out with the cheeky sound of an electric harp but inside it hides a seed that sprouts to enormous proportions. beneath the beauty you can feel something sweltering, wanting to expose itself. it links back to the beginning and finally lifts you off with a grand gesture. if you remember me then i don’t care if veryone else forgets, uses haunting atmospheres that remind of 80’s science fiction or the eerie vibes found in twin peaks to provide safe landing ground beneath the feet after your flight. l.o.v.e. forms an appropriate conclusion to the story, reflecting with a melancholic chord progression, soul healing choirs and the phonetic symbols ‘lima, oscar, victor, echo’ repeating till infinity.

the fourteenth effort in the attic music series is a full ep by roman artist cristiano balducci under his black catcher alias. gossip is a firm and futuristic sounding bundle of modern day techno which spans 3 tracks.
on the a-side we find the title track gossip which is a scorching haul of tough drum sounds and hypnotizing arp sounds that build throughout.
the opening track on the b side is a remix of the track by cristiano balducci himself of more acidic proportions.
the final cut on this 12 is the original into the void, which showcases a deeper side of black catcher. this track is built around a misty atmosphere and soaring synth patches.

this june session victim return to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album.listen to your heartis the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco’s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lpsee you when you get there. here we present the first of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew. bring it back gets things rolling with session victim’s trademark live drum breaks, looped up pads and hooky vocal samples. only good vibes here, with uplifting keys bringing a warm and soulful edge whilst shimmering juno notes add a floaty element to get lost in. next up we have if we can make it here, the title being something of an in-joke with the boys when they find themselves in the more remote or far-flung corners of the world performing their music to an appreciating crowd. the track is based around a simple yet beautiful 4-bar chord progression repeating throughout and shows svm in a playful and jazzy mood, managing to include soloing flute and marching snare drum rhythms without as much of a flinch!moons and flowers is up next, another sublime slice of hazy house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. echoing rhodes licks join dubby synth fx, adding waves of colour whilst the gentle vocal provides the icing on the space-cake. lastly we have the hatch, which winds things down somewhat for a lovely, somewhat stoned interlude track which is over all too soon. an impeccable demonstration of retro-inspired yet forward thinking house,listen to your heartsees session victim at the top of their game.

here we have the first release on husten. husten is a new label from apiento (aka paul byrne) from test pressing. ‘the orange place’ by apiento & co was originally released on world unknown and from there became a favourite with everyone from todd terje and andrew weatherall and the balearic crowd. apiento asked wolf mu&#776,,ller to have a play with the track and here we are. wolf mu&#776,,ller is from du&#776,,sseldorf. he made his name as a dj at the infamous salon des amateurs and from there as a producer for labels like themes for great cities and collaborator with the likes of young marco as young wolf

monsieur kapote comes back with another deep funk house ep on toy tonics. slap bass, wurlitzer jazz pianos, old school house drum machines, nasty talks. this new three- tracker continues the vibe of his last single the nose (that went no.1 on traxsource and juno and is still getting hammered by dj’s from all kind of scenes). this is slow grooving dance music. nothing is stressy here. jazz funk inspired mid- tempo house with live played bass, keyboards and lot of warm harmonies. played with a high musical level. pure quality. in fact kapote used to play keyboards and bass in jazz bands before getting absorbed by dance music culture. he is a big fan of late 60ies hard bob jazz as well as 1970ies jazz funk and disco. you can feel these vibes in all of his tracks. besides producing his own music kapote also is running toy tonics records with his buddies manuel kim and munk.

* mikal takes his first bow for dust audio in the form of the spirited ep . the break and bass craftsman reigns down an assault of almighty weight for the imprint which holds no barred. * off the back of his critically acclaimed wilderness album on metalheadz, mikal continues to seek out the dance floor through his precision target and locks on for a serious assault of the senses. * the ep’s title track “spirited” see’s the sinister intro build up and transform into a bass laden drop. the stepping drums and jungle infused shuffles entwine with the ghost vocal, whilst the modulated bass will move even the harshest drum n bass skeptics. unrelenting throughout. * the flip sees mikal spread his considerable studio talent over two further tunes of constant surprise. low note wastes no time in getting to the drop before you’ve had chance to take a breath. a thunderous one note bass underpins the mid ranged reece and stabs whilst the chunky drums compliment the tidy percussion nicely. a haunting vocal then sets off another 16 bars of unclouded rawness. * linear finishes the ep with aplomb. synth chords open up into what you might expect to be a lovely liquid-esque style roller… think again! mikal takes that premise and turns it upside down and inside out before bringing the dirty funk. keeping in line with the 2 tunes before, this isn’t for the faint hearted. definitely one for the drum & bass purest, who may well be dancing, but will also be taking down mental notes!

after only two years since their first release on cyclone, amoss have become one of the most exciting and forward thinking names in drum & bass. a love of music stretching back into both their pasts, the duo have amazed audiences across the globe with the style, panache and variation which has characterised their work. taking a lead from names such as renegade hardware and moving shadow, james and andrew have successfully moulded their influences into a futuristic, genre-defining sound.
now they are ready to step up a notch, delivering a new release for the mighty horizons label. bumbaclart and dilate will go a long way to cementing their reputation for big, bad and heavy d&b, which has seen them being supported by spectrasoul, london elektricity, storm, loxy and more. amoss are known for their involving, evolving blend of beats and bass and their in-depth knowledge of the technical side of production, and the two tracks on show here are markers of their intention, in two markedly different ways.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

french producer and dj john jastszebski has been involved in the french and global underground house and techno scene for over a decade now, releasing on imprints such as d’julz’ bass culture, phil weeks’ robsoul, syncrophone recordings and of course phonogramme where he returns to here. the original mix of lead track ‘season’ takes the lead via infectious stab sequences, snaking subs and raw organic percussion before kai alce’s ‘restructure’ of ‘season’ follows and tips the focus over to airy chords, jazz-tinged lead melodies and a bumpy rhythmic swing. illusion’ follows and sees jastszebski focus on a more stripped-back aesthetic with rolling drums, dusty string samples and warm rhodes driving the composition. ‘gracelend’ then closes the package with smooth, unfolding pad melodies, crunch drum sounds and a murky, hypnotic feel.

the label from avion comes with its 9th installment releasing a full single ep from the canadian artist duo ’the automatic message’. the release starts with ’tessellation’ which brings up a dreamy atmosphere turning into a floor bomb with crashing analog snares a pushing drum and driving rides never losing its fragile built atmosphere. the b-­&#8208,side comes with a rough and storming track ’paint by numbers’ full of noises and driving percussions forming a killer of function to move the floor. closing the release with the ’towers of hanoi’ an acidic techno track creating an outer space full of noises and effects for special people in special locations leaving the world to be surreal.

we at finale sessions are excited to have mor elians added to the finale sessions family . mor is one of the younger generation artists that we have been keeping our eye on for sometime now. hailing from tel aviv and now living in los angeles and berlin and now travelling the world bringing her style of forward thinking house and techno so lets get with the music and we start with the track the orionids one of my favorites of the ep with its bouncing drums and the industrial flexing pads and the filtering synth s that give it the deepness for days. then we move to the second track light pollution another proper deep rendering if i may add and those high hats that just move the track into the proper scenic vibe, very minimal but to the point with the pads just poking its head out to go forth with the flow of the vocal. last but not least we have echopark-this track closes out the ep with its very bouncy acid sounds and it s minimalistic drum patterns makes for a very melodic sound. we at finale sessions want to thank you from the bottoms of our hearts and we love you very much

toydrum are a duo who sneak into the consciousness. not for them the full frontal assault but, instead, a drip-feed of classy work that many may know without knowing. their hugely acclaimed work with the late singer-songwriter gavin clark lit up shane meadows’ ‘this is england ‘90’, their rework of john lennon’s ‘how do you sleep’ led noel gallagher to have them remix his high flying birds hit ‘in the heat of the moment’ (which, in turn, soundtracked last year’s epic ad for the latest ‘assassin’s creed’ game), and their soundtracks for films such as the recent tye sheridan-starring thriller ‘detour’ and alice lowe’s 2016 venice film festival opener, ‘prevenge’, have broadened their appeal further. toydrum’s signing to skint records is now announced and celebrated by ‘my eye on you (to reinvision)’, a collective interpretation of their work thus far, running the gamut from nick cave’s balladry to trentemøller’s drum & bass-tinted electronica.

glaswegian techno stalwart edit select presents the thirtieth effort in his edit select records series. “aftereffekts” is a 4 track release that opens with the thumping “the visitor”, this track combines puzzling percussive movements with otherwordly pads which subtly build to a hypnotic climax.
“fallen” is a broad sounding cut with an almost orchestral touch to it. the uncanny drum patterns and repetative fx make for a solid voyage. “aftereffect” is a percussion laden cut with soul touching strings that float throughout. “you” is a melancholic piece of art that incorporates heavenly pads with beautifully orchestrated rhodes sounds and a hypnotic drumtrack.

the newly formed hungarian pæonï music is making waves with its first outing. grema, the man behind the label and its debut release, is a well known character in budapest s underground techno and house scene. all three cuts on delays ep are for the dance floor, specifically designed to make people move. darker, dubby prophet-8 chords are reinforced by dynamic drum-sets and samples, which finely balance between the modern and traditional side of house music.

rekids introduces a new vinyl only series titled rekids special projects. a more techno orientated division of the label that will feature appearances from the likes of john hester, markus suckut, and dj deep amongst others. first up is ohio-based producer fbk, real name kevin m. kennedy, who has a career spanning three decades and after a seminal release on frictional recordings back in the 90 s recent releases have seen him appear on labels such as marcel dettmann records, barba records and diametric. intricate drums and jagged synths initiate you are not fixed whilst a looped sample recurs throughout the mix. ‘dynamonium’ then enters deeper territories as echoing stabs join a low slung meandering groove before set it free ups the energy with rumbling kicks, distorted vocal murmurs and tantalizing melodies. the final escape then closes the release with a syncopated drum arrangement, mesmerising chords and ethereal atmospherics

florian meindl surges ahead in 2017 as he returns once more to his home base flash recordings. he has been locked away in his studio and is now ready to unleash his new album ‘time illusion’. with these album sessions florian has created a special collection of analogue focused tracks which will be released on a double vinyl album and digitally in the spring. amalgamating his array of impressive hardware, he has refined his sound and crafted a selection of tracks that demonstrate intricate knowledge and mastery of his analogue equipment. his aim was to find the right balance between musical depth and sound design while interacting with the hardware. in anticipation for the lp release in early april, florian has prepared a unique live set featuring a modular system, the korg minilogue, effect boxes and a 909 drum machine which were used in the creation of the album and which he will be touring throughout 2017. electronic beats visited him in his basement at riverside studios berlin to record an exclusive live session, which you can find on youtube and his facebook page.
